It's become increasingly difficult to find a Brazilian bossa nova singer not interested in electronic production values. For those yearning to hear bossa nova music played acoustically, singer Rosa Passos is the answer. Her pitch perfect voice is almost girlish and coy, but her supple phrasing shows her to be a true veteran. Her star's been on the rise since her impressive contributions to Yo-Yo Ma's Obrigado Brazil (Ma guests here as well), and now she's landed on Sony Classical for her major label debut. A tip of the hat to Joao Gilberto's classic Amoroso features four bossa nova classics from that album, two more Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions and six others. The small-group arrangements are often restrained but jazzy (channeling a little Stan Getz), while the orchestral format for three tunes is a velvety a nod to Claus Ogerman's lush arrangements of many bossa nova classics. Terence Trent d'Arby's Wildcard!, or simply referred to as Wildcard, is Terence Trent D'Arby's fifth album. It was released in 2001 on his own independent record label Sananda Records following a six year absence from the spotlight.

Where have you gone, Terence Trent d'Arby? It's a question that must have entered the minds of even casual Terence Trent d'Arby fans during his six-plus-year absence from the spotlight following TTD's Vibrator. In fact, it was an extraordinarily eventful period for the artist, during which, among other things, he fought for and finally won his freedom from Sony, set up shop in Italy, experienced a profound personal and spiritual rebirth, altered his name accordingly, signed a deal with producer Glen Ballard's small Java imprint, spent much of 1998 recording three albums' worth of songs, had a creative falling out and parted ways with Ballard, started his own record label, spent several years putting the finishing touches on and whittling down a set of songs for a comeback tentatively titled The Solar Return of TTD, then finally re-emerged with the 19-track Terence Trent d'Arby's Wildcard! Those with the patience to stick by d'Arby were rewarded with this incomparably rich masterpiece, arguably his finest recording yet, and inarguably as bold, ambitious, and uncategorizable a return as anyone could have hoped for or imagined. Let's call it Introducing the Hardline According to Sananda Maitreya. A record this adventurous rarely makes it through the red tape, so it is fitting that Wildcard! found its own way to the public. Fitting also that it introduces itself by way of the ebullient brass blowout "O Divina," quaint clawhammer banjo giving way to swooping, Chicago-esque horn charts and a gutsy, gymnastic tenor as sweet as Sam Cooke's was smooth. The song may be something of a throwback, but the rest of the album is decidedly forward-looking, whether reinventing R&B for the 21st century (the gauzy "Girl," mellow "Some Birds Blue," and the roboto-funk of "SRR-636*" and "My Dark Places," the latter like a futuristic Earth, Wind & Fire fronted by Al Green), staying a few loops ahead of the electronica curve (the Dallas Austin-produced "Drivin' Me Crazy" and "Ev'rythang," which can only be labeled -- if it must -- trip-hop), or extending the sensual jazz fusion of Vibrator's "Undeniably" on "Shalom." That still leaves copious room for honeyed pop like "Sweetness" (with a guest spot by Wendy Melvoin) and "Sayin' About You" and the creamy rock of "And They Will Never Know" and "Goodbye Diane." All that and the newly metamorphosed Maitreya gives a remarkably sublime vocal performance throughout. Wildcard! is soul music with a capital S and in the broadest, most stirring, and visionary sense.

Some albums are so obvious it’s a wonder they didn’t exist before, and so it is with Chris Isaak's Beyond the Sun, a double-disc salute to the classic rock & roll label Sun Records. Ever since his first album, Isaak has exhibited an enormous debt to the titans who recorded at Sun, particularly Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley, whose work is showcased heavily here. Isaak doesn’t stick strictly to songs released on Sun -- he covers “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” which Presley did not release during his time on Sun -- but he doesn’t stick to the obvious, either, finding excellent songs from the likes of Warren Smith. Still, Elvis rules the roost, not only in terms of songs covered, but in approach. Isaak croons like the King, smoothing out the rough edges of Carl Perkins' “Dixie Fried” and Jerry Lee's “Great Balls of Fire,” smoothing them out enough to push them to a smoky, late-night torch song. Beyond the Sun plays it cool and plays it authentic -- these aren’t reinterpretations, but sincere homages -- and if this doesn’t have much grit, it has plenty of style and heart.

Beyond The Sun is a new album by Chris Isaak, released through Vanguard Records on October 18, 2011. It is a collection of songs originally released on Sun Records and recorded by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. The record itself was recorded at Sun Studio, Memphis, Tennessee.

Chris Isaak's longstanding desire to musically salute his inspirations was fast-tracked when he read a 2000 interview with the great Sun Records producer Sam Phillips that appeared in the Oxford American. Near the end of the Q&A, Phillips was asked if any contemporary recording artists grabbed his attention. His response blew Chris away. "I don't keep up with the business like I used to," said Phillips, "but I love to listen to Chris Isaak. He's very talented, and his music is so damned honest. It's incredible." That pretty much sealed the deal for this Sun worshiper. The accurately titled Beyond the Sun, Chris Isaak's Vanguard Records debut is a self-described labor of love. Since he fell in love with his parents' 45s as a child in Stockton, California, this passionate writer/artist has been obsessed with the glory days of Memphis' Sun Studio and the visionary artists who got their starts there--including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis--all of them discovered and nurtured by Sam Phillips. This early Herbie Mann set matches him with his fellow flutist, Sam Most. (Originally, this date was known as The Mann with the Most.) Recorded back during Mann's bebop period, the set teams the two flutists with guitarist Joe Puma, bassist Jimmy Gannon, and drummer Lee Kleinman. The quintet performs nine standards plus an original apiece from Most and Puma. Highlights include "Fascinating Rhythm," "Let's Get Away from It All," and "Seven Come Eleven." Most was actually the better known of the two flutists at the time but, while he ended up in the Los Angeles studios, Mann's constant musical curiosity would result in him gaining worldwide fame. Their enjoyable music finds the flutists battling it out to a draw.

"Lyambiko sings Gershwin" is the new promising album of one of the great German jazz singers and already the Thuringian is praised to the skies. No wonder, since she won the 2011 ECHO Jazz in the category "Singer of the Year."
On her new album Lyambiko interpretes known and unknown Gershwin songs in a swinging look. Convincingly, she shows her warm and almost purring voice recognition. ‘Let It be Roberta’ is the first album in 8 years from the soul star.
Roberta Flack is a neighbour of Yoko Ono’s. She lives in the Dakota Building in New York, the building where John Lennon was murdered in 1980.

RED BLUES was recorded on just four days in Bremen, Germany, with the participitation of Mary’s regular accompanist Peter O’Brien on piano, Londoner Frank Mead - from Bill Wyman’s current band - on saxophones, and the US rhythm section of Bill Rich (bass) and Kester Smith (drums) – both known from various bands of Taj Mahal. For just one day the Canadian string wizards of the Tri-Continental group joined the proceedings: Bill Bourne, Lester Quitzau and Madagascar Slim were touring Northern Europe at the time and their contribution moved quite a lot of strings in a very short period of time. T & M owner Petra Hanisch produced the record and with this project again she was able to work with an artist who had previously guested in Bremen for the "Women in (E)Motion” festival. Following AFTER THE FALL and LONG HONEYMOON, recorded in New York with ex-Tom Waits cohort Greg Cohen, this is Mary Coughlan’s third studio production after returning to the scene.

2011 posthumous release, a collection of previously unreleased tracks, alternate versions of existing classics, as well as a couple of brand new Amy compositions. Following her tragic passing, some of the producers and musicians who worked closely with Amy Winehouse, among them Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, spent time listening over the many recordings that Amy had made, before, during, and after the release of 2 her albums. It quickly became apparent to Salaam and Mark that they had a collection of songs that deserved to be heard, a collection of songs that were a fitting treatment to Amy the artist and, as importantly, Amy the friend.

The qualities of a vocal genius don't always become clear when she's singing classic material. Often as not, her abilities to both personalize and transcend a lifeless song with a stellar performance reveal the character behind the singer. Both Billie Holiday and Otis Redding excelled no matter what they were recording, whether it was a timeless standard or a studio throwaway. This collection of Amy Winehouse material, released to coincide with the first Christmas season after her death in July 2011, does not contain a strong set of material. Besides the covers, which are well chosen, originals "Between the Cheats" and "Best Friends, Right?" and "Half Time" should not have survived the cut if Winehouse had been around to wield her veto power. But if the songwriting isn’t strong enough to make listeners confuse this with a Back to Black follow-up, the productions and performances are up to her high caliber. Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson handled virtually all of the production work, while these performances by Winehouse are just as strong as she showed on Frank and Back to Black. Thanks to the work of Remi and Ronson, the album is also strikingly uniform; only the songwriting and prevalence of covers or "original versions" reveal that this is a posthumous collection. Ronson's production on "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" is towering, although he injects a little more drama into his chart than the song can support, while a skittering version of "The Girl from Ipanema" (nearly drum’n’bass at points) nearly reinvents a tired classic. The recordings stretch from the beginning of her professional career to close to the end, but Winehouse is virtually always in strong voice; only on her Tony Bennett duet, “Body and Soul,” does she veer into self-parody.

With his second and last album under the Creed Taylor aegis, the complexities of Quincy Jones' catholic, evolving tastes start to reveal themselves. We hear signs of his gradual gravitation toward pop right off the bat with the churchy R&B cover of Paul Simon's mega-hit "Bridge Over Troubled Water," dominated by Valerie Simpson's florid soul vocal and a gospel choir. His roots fixation surfaces in the spell-like African groove of the title track, a dramatic tone poem that ebbs and flows masterfully over its 13-minute length. From this point on, it's all jazz; the roaring big band comes back with a vengeance in "Walkin'," where Milt Jackson, Herbie Hancock, Hubert Laws, and other jazzers take fine solo turns, and things really get rocking on Nat Adderley's "Hummin'. Funny, ballsy, the type of old-school dame who can get away with wearing a three-piece suit and hold her own with the gents. That’s Treasa Levasseur. Now she has completed a third full-length album which represents both a return to her roots and a gutsy move into uncharted territory — and she’s cheerfully titled it Broad.
“There were a few reasons for naming the record Broad. First and foremost, in the movie of my life, I’ve never been the ingénue,” she insists. “I’m not the one who gets the guy, I’m the one who gets the scoop — less pretty lady and more the trusted Girl Friday. If I were a Hepburn, I’d be Katherine, not Audrey… I’m a lot more interested in being smart than I am in being cute.”
Levasseur also says she also named the record Broad to reflect the many musical influences the various players and producers brought to the table. The most jazz-oriented of the elderly musicians in the Buena Vista Social Club, pianist Ruben Gonzalez was 77 at the time of this CD, his debut as a leader. Although he did not even own his own piano at the time, he plays brilliantly, performing a variety of traditional melodies plus two originals, often quoting other songs and really stretching himself. His chord voicings are distinctive and very inviting, his control of the piano is quite impressive, and the music sings its heart out. The CD was recorded spontaneously over a two-day period with Gonzalez mostly being the lead voice, assisted by trumpeter Manuel Mirabal (who has some fine solos), bassist Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez, several percussionists, and occasionally three background singers. This set is impossible not to love.

On NORTH AND SOUTH, Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza traverses both hemispheres to lend her unique, technically accomplished voice to American and Brazilian standards. Souza's vocal approach is significant in that she marries the thin, studied tonality of classic Brazilian singers like Elis Regina to phrasings and rhythms that reflect contemporary North American vocalists. Alternating between English and Portuguese, Souza manages to sound at once detached, impassioned, casual, harmonically adventurous, rhythmically loose, and technically precise on every cut here.
Perhaps it can be attributed to Souza's ease with the material, but she seems to excel at the Brazilian tunes. It is her treatments of Antonio Carlos Jobim's bossa nova classics "Corcovado" and "Chega de Saudade" that are the real standouts. Souza's self-penned "No Wonder" is also engaging, a free and easy swing through which the singer's phrases knot and unfurl. Excellent support from a small ensemble of musicians makes this showcase of Souza's talents a sure bet.

Accompanied by pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Buddy Rich, Fitzgerald and Armstrong perform 11 standards with joy and swing. Heart of a Woman is a great idea for an album. Etta James chose 11 love songs from her favorite female singers -- Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughn, and Carmen McRae -- augmenting the album with a new version of her signature song, "At Last." She has recorded several of these songs before (including Alice Cooper's "Only Women Bleed," which inexplicably became a standard for both her and McRae), but the difference with Heart of a Woman is the context. Here, they're put in a smooth jazz setting, masterminded by James, who has producer credit. There's no denying that Etta James is a powerhouse, one of the finest blues singers of the 20th century, and she still possesses an exceptionally strong voice, robust and filled with passion.

Classical violinist Itzhak Perlman is not a jazz improviser so this meeting with the Oscar Peterson Quartet is more a loving tribute to the melodies ( ten veteran standards plus two Peterson originals ) than a strong jazz date. While Perlman sticks closely to the themes, one's attention focuses much more on Peterson who had suffered a serious stroke a few years earlier and had been inactive ever since. Peterson sounds healthy in his supportive role and, although it is doubtful if he sweated much during this relaxed music, his apparent comeback is great news. Guitarist Herb Ellis has the most rewarding solos ( although his spots are short ) but overall this is a so-so effort. It's better to acquire Oscar Peterson's earlier records. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

The charms of these melodies are enhanced by the way Perlman plays his sweepingly beautiful violin. 'Yours Is My Heart Alone' completely captivated my ears. It is adapted from a classical piece 'Dein Ist Mein Ganzes Herz' composed by Franz Lehár from the operetta 'The Land of Smiles.' It's one of my most magical listening moments. While 'Misty' has that tranquil beauty that will penetrate your heart and soul, 'Blue Skies' is all jazzed-up, it will put a smile on your face and will add spark to your listening experience. The interplay between Peterson and Perlman in 'I Loves You Porgy' is so enchanting. They allow each other to have their own shining moments. I've never thought a piano and a violin will produce an utterly entrancing sound. Piano and violin combination is a sheer delight. I can imagine George Gershwin listening to this gorgeous piece with a big smile on his face.

Fans of Peterson and Perlman should not miss out on this recording. What makes this album so special to me is that two of my all-time favorite melodies which are seldom recorded are here, 'Dark Eyes' and 'Yours Is My Heart Alone.' My ears are grateful and blissful!

Em novo disco, Marisa Monte traz tranquilidade e letras sobre encontros, paixões e bem viver

O título do novo álbum de Marisa Monte, "O Que Você Quer Saber de Verdade", não é uma pergunta. Cheio de tranquilidades, placidez e letras sobre encontros, paixões, paz e bem viver, mesmo quando triste, é um disco que segue o caminho de Marisa de fazer música ampla de referências e ao mesmo tempo simples. Ouvimos as 14 canções do álbum, que chegou em 31 de dezembro às lojas, e notamos os destaques em um faixa-a-faixa.

1) "O Que Você Quer Saber de Verdade"
Com arranjo delicado levado por ukulele e cordas, a faixa que dá título e abre o disco é parceria de Marisa com seus colegas Tribalistas Carlinhos Brown e Arnaldo Antunes e foi gravada originalmente por Arnaldo, em seu álbum "Qualquer", de 2006 (clique aqui para ouvir). Segundo a cantora, a música é "sobre a busca individual da felicidade, desejo e liberdade". A faixa foi a segunda do novo álbum a ganhar vídeo, com Marisa caminhando pelo Rio com efeitos visuais similares à arte de capa do disco.

2) "Descalço no Parque"
Terceira regravação de Jorge Ben pela cantora (antes havia feito "Cinco Minutos" no disco "Memória, Crônicas e Declarações de Amor" de 2000 e "Balança Pema" no disco "Verde, Anil, Amarelo, Cor-de-Rosa e Carvão" de 1994), a valsa-jazz originalmente lançada no segundo álbum de Jorge, "Ben é Samba Bom" de 1964 (clique aqui para ouvir), aqui aparece como um dos melhores momentos do álbum novo de Marisa. O som do órgão hammond se destaca em sua discrição, Domenico Lancellotti toca bateria e o arranjo de cordas é do californiano Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, que toca com o músico experimental Flying Lotus e em 2009 realizou o show orquestral "Suite for Ma Dukes" dedicado ao rapper J. Dilla.

3) "Depois"
Outra parceria de Marisa com Arnaldo Antunes e Carlinhos Brown. Baladinha no piano com detalhes de órgão e cordas, com som de Marisa Monte habitual. A base foi gravada por Lúcio Maia, Dengue e Pupillo, da Nação Zumbi, e as cordas também são de Atwood-Ferguson. A letra versa sobre um fim de amor, entre a tristeza e a vontade de se melhorar: "quero que você seja feliz / hei de ser feliz também".

4) "Amar Alguém"
Parceria inédita de Marisa Monte com Arnaldo Antunes e o baixista e multiinstrumentista Dadi (que produziu o álbum com ela), a faixa é outra balada singela no estilo de Marisa. A letra é quase uma resposta à anterior: "amar alguém só pode fazer bem / não há como fazer mal a ninguém". No violão, aparece Jesse Harris, autor de hits de Norah Jones. O arranjo segue delicado, sem bateria e com vocais da própria Marisa ao fundo, levado por piano e sanfona.

5) "O Que Se Quer"
Canção escrita por Marisa com Rodrigo Amarante, músico de formações como Los Hermanos, Little Joy, Orquestra Imperial e da banda de Devendra Banhart. Juntos, cantam forrozinho suave, destaque do novo álbum, com ele tocando quase todos os instrumentos: violão, baixo, percussão, viola, teclado, drum machine. Pupillo toca bateria e a sanfona é tocada por Waldonys, acordeonista virtuose elogiado por Luiz Gonzaga e Dominguinhos.

6) "Nada Tudo"
Composição de André Carvalho, jovem filho de Dadi que já teve música gravada por Maria Gadú e que lançou no começo do ano seu primeiro CD, "Tempo do Tanto", que inclui a canção aqui relida por Marisa. Bom momento do disco, com arranjo que inclui bandolim tocado por Dadi e belo solo de sanfona de Waldonys.

7) "Verdade, Uma Ilusão"
Outra parceria de Marisa com os Tribalistas Arnaldo Antunes e Carlinhos Brown, já gravada por Brown no álbum "Diminuto", de 2010. Singela canção de se apaixonar e sobre como cada um vê as coisas a seu modo, com violãozinho bossa-jazz, Pupillo e Marisa tocando bateria e arranjo de clarinete e violino de Atwood-Ferguson.

8) "Lencinho Querido"
Antigo tango de Juan de Dios Filiberto e Gabino Coria Peñaloza, em versão em português gravado anteriormente em 1956 por Dalva de Oliveira, grande cantora do Trio de Ouro, famoso nos anos de 1940. O drama carrega um pouco de amor em sua leveza e o arranjo de cordas é de Gustavo Mozzi, do coletivo argentino Café de Los Maestros. Belo momento.

9) "Ainda Bem"
Escrita por Marisa e Arnaldo Antunes, canção simples e letra que fala de encontrar um amor. Foi o primeiro vídeo do disco, protagonizado pela cantora com o lutador de MMA Anderson Silva. A base musical cruza músicos da Nação Zumbi com entonações de faroeste italiano com o argentino Gustavo Santaolalla e trompete de gosto mariachi.

For some, the Cowboy Junkies will always be associated with their seminal 1988 album The Trinity Sessions, a stunningly gentle fusion of country, blues, folk and rock. In the years since the band have continued to release albums, maintaining a cult following outside of their Canadian home. To remain intact for twenty five years is commendable, especially when considering how many artists and genres have arrived and departed in this time. Often at this stage in the career a band faces the accusation that their critical and commercial peak lies in the past and they are surfing on the gentle ebbing goodwill of their remaining fans. Is this the case with Sing In My Meadow or have the Cowboy Junkies bucked this trend?

This is the third in a four part “Nomad Series”, to be released over an eighteen month period. This in itself suggests a band of some vigour to contemplate such a compact release schedule. The albums in this series are a mix of new songs and covers, inspired by their travels and through live playing. This effort is a collection of new songs that they describe as “Acid Blues” themed on “sex and violence”, a musical result of “psychedelic interplay that the band creates during our more adventurous meanderings on stage”.

The product of this process is simply fantastic. Forget the history; despite the plaudits garnered in the past, in the context of this album it is simply un-necessary baggage. This is an album that stands alone and any artist of the last twenty five years would ache to have been able to produce it. From the opening track 'Continental Drift' the album errupts in an electric burst of vitality. Dissonant guitars swirl and take shape around Margot Timmins voice which has a richness and a confidence to drive the songs forward. Sometimes we need bands to defy conventions, to warp the templates, to buck the trends - if only so that when we prepare to listen to a new album for the first time we retain the ability to be surprised. With Sing In My Meadow prepare to be astounded. This is the product of band that is on a creative peak and we can only look forward to see where they take us next. A triumph.

Confession, they say, is good for the soul. So this reviewer must confess to only a recent realization of Freddy Cole's extraordinary talent. Simply put, he knows how to do it; this tribute to another singer who gets it—Tony Bennett—is touching.

Cole's relaxed, bluesy approach, enhanced by those cracks in his voice, is perfect for "I Got Lost in Her Arms." And although Billie Holiday comes to mind first for "Getting Some Fun out of Life," there is no quibble with Cole's reading, shadowed by Houston Person's soulful tenor sax cries.

Key to this session too is arranger/pianist John DiMartino. His settings never call attention to themselves; they simply provide the perfect frame for Cole to tell his stories. Likewise, he offers self-effacing accompaniment that complements the singer and the band (catch what he plays under the singer's reprise on "Blame It on My Youth") and he shines when he steps out to solo.

The mood here is subdued, but swing rears its head beautifully on "Because of You." Unfortunately, this song highlights the session's one weakness: it is too much of the same thing—mood, tempo, routine—though expertly done. It misses the pop of his previous release, This Love of Mine (HighNote, 2005). It does though offer "All for You," Django Reinhardt's haunting "Nuages," outfitted with words (and a Latin rhythm), as well as the seldom-heard "What Are You Afraid Of?" and Louis Armstrong's "If We Never Meet Again." But, these pieces notwithstanding, the sense of surprise and whimsy in the previous session is missing.

When the discussion turns to his singing and his raw act of creation, Cole is virtually beyond reproach. Mellow and loving, he offers here a heartfelt tribute to the octogenarian Bennett, his compatriot in the noble art of popular song.

It is ironic that what is arguably singer Betty Rochй's finest all-around recording was also her last. For this session, which has been reissued in the OJC series on CD, Roche (backed by pianist Jimmy Neeley, guitarist Wally Richardson, bassist Michel Mulia, and drummer Rudy Lawless) improvises constantly and uplifts a variety of superior standards, including "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," "I Had the Craziest Dream," and three songs by her former boss, Duke Ellington. It's recommended, particularly to jazz fans not aware of Betty Roche's musical talents.

In 1964, trumpeter Chet Baker returned to the United States after five sometimes-traumatic years spent overseas (which included a long stay in an Italian jail for drug abuse). Baker recorded prolifically during his first 14 months back in the States, including a set for Colpix, two records for Limelight, and, in a busy three-day period, five albums for Prestige titled Groovin' , Comin' On, Cool Burnin', Smokin', and Boppin' With the Chet Baker Quintet. The Prestige sets have been long overlooked and only partially reissued in the past, but in 1997 they reappeared as three CDs. Teamed up with tenorman George Coleman (fresh from his notable period with Miles Davis), the young pianist Kirk Lightsey (who sometimes takes solo honors), and the supportive bass-drums team of Herman Wright and Roy Brooks, Baker (sticking exclusively to flugelhorn) is heard throughout in top form. Although his cool style was very much intact (sometimes hinting strongly at both Miles Davis and Shorty Rogers), Baker also plays with surprising fire in spots.

Here, Pieranunzi introduces Chet to “Nightbird”, a tune that will become a regular until his last days. Baker sings on an odd “Animali Diurni”, proving that Chet does well when singing standards, but original tunes usually don’t work for him. The Chet once again reinvents “My Funny Valentine” by playing muted trumpet, something he rarely did for that song.

Like a letter from a favorite friend - Smooth Jazz supergroup Acoustic Alchemy writes again... This time they've written in "American English," which is, as we would be inclined to say in America, totally cool. Celebrating their 20th anniversary the British instrumental ensemble has released, in our opinion, one of their best projects to date... Sophisticated, captivating and fresh. Reminding me a bit of 1991's BACK ON THE CASE with regard to how that album impacted music at that time. Starting off smooth and hip on AMERICAN/ENGLISH with "The Crossing," moving right into the current radio hit, "Say Yeah," which offers some fun, cutting edge production where the guitar riffs are "chopped" for effect; this technique has been utilized by dance/pop artists like Madonna and Craig David. For you Chill/Lounge enthusiasts, check out "So Kylie," a delicious groove with sweet vocalizing combined with that signature Acoustic Alchemy sound. The name references the U.K. dance scene and diva Kylie Minogue. Another stand out track, "She Speaks American English," funks up the place a bit. According to AA manger, Stewart Coxhead, "It's an English take on a sound that is very American, with maybe a few Steely Dan quotes thrown in." My personal favorite is the deep "Lilac Lane" for it's rich texture, complex emotion and haunting melody. Feels like the Monterey Bay area to me... Although Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond made many rewarding recordings together, this was their only duo album; it was inspired by several duo performances on board a cruise ship. Their magical ESP is evident from start to finish. Brubeck's lyricism throughout these sessions will surprise critics who label him as "bombastic," while Desmond, known for his pure dry-toned alto sax, throws a few curves to his longtime fans. The loping waltz treatment of "Alice in Wonderland" and a delicate interpretation of the Mexican folk song "The Blue Dove" contrast with their abstract approach to "Stardust." The especially adventurous introduction to Brubeck's oriental blues "Koto Song" opens with Desmond providing percussion by tapping on his instrument's keys without blowing; the piece then slowly evolves from random-sounding fragments into its haunting theme. Their return visit to "Balcony Rock," a collaborative effort from the 1950s, is an absolutely buoyant miniature. Brubeck performs his "Summer Song" alone in a mood of celebration, unlike the wistful flavor of his first recording of it with Louis Armstrong. The audio source for "You Go to My Head" is a BBC videotape made during the concert which inspired the making of this album, but the memorable interaction between the two musicians during this performance should be considered one of the high points of their respective careers. This 2002 CD reissue improves upon the wretched sound of the original LP (caused by use of recycled vinyl) and an earlier CD which omitted Desmond's liner notes and most of the photos. This limited-edition disc is beautifully packaged in a mini-LP gatefold cover with a soft cloth sleeve for the disc. This is an essential acquisition for fans of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond.

Tomes are available annotating the importance of this recording. The musical and social impact of Miles Davis, his collaborative efforts with Gil Evans, and in particular their reinvention of George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess are indeed profound. However, the most efficient method of extricating the rhetoric and opining is to experience the recording. Few other musical teams would have had the ability to remain true to the undiluted spirit and multifaceted nuance of this epic work. However, no other musical teams were Miles Davis and Gil Evans. It was Evans' intimate knowledge of the composition as well as the performer that allowed him to so definitively capture the essence of both. The four dates needed to complete work on Porgy and Bess include contributions from several members of his most recent musical aggregate: Julian "Cannonball" Adderley (alto sax), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums). Although the focus and emphasis is squarely on Davis throughout, the contributions of the quartet on "Prayer (Oh Doctor Jesus)," "I Loves You, Porgy," and "There's a Boat That's Leaving Soon for New York" are immeasurable. They provide a delicate balance in style and, under the direction of Evans, incorporate much of the same energy and intonation here as they did to their post-bop recordings. There is infinitely more happening on Porgy and Bess, however, with much of the evidence existing in the subtle significance of the hauntingly lyrical passages from Danny Banks' (alto flute) solos, which commence on "Fishermen, Strawberry and Devil Crab." Or the emotive bass and tuba duet that runs throughout "Buzzard Song." The impeccable digital remastering and subsequent CD reissue — which likewise applies to the Miles Davis & Gil Evans: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings box set — only magnifies the refulgence of Porgy and Bess. Likewise, two previously unissued performances have been appended to the original baker's dozen. No observation or collection of American jazz can be deemed complete without this recording.

The long-awaited first collaboration between two icons, Count Basie and Frank Sinatra, did something unique for the reputations of both. For Basie, the Sinatra connection inaugurated a period in the '60s where his band was more popular and better-known than it ever was, even in the big-band era. For Sinatra, Basie meant liberation, producing perhaps the loosest, rhythmically free singing of his career. Propelled by the irresistible drums of Sonny Payne, Sinatra careens up to and around the tunes, reacting jauntily to the beat and encouraging Payne to swing even harder, which was exactly the way to interact with the Basie rhythm machine — using his exquisite timing flawlessly. Also the members of the Basie band play a more prominent role than usual on a Sinatra record, with soloists like Frank Wess — in some of the finest flute work of his life — and tenors Frank Foster and Eric Dixon getting prominent solo opportunities on several of the tracks. The record was criticized by some as a letdown when it came out, probably because Neal Hefti's charts rarely permit the band to roar, concentrating on use of subtlety and space. Yet the record's restraint has worn very well over the long haul — it doesn't beat you into submission — and it concludes with its best shot, a wonderfully playful treatment of "I Won't Dance."

When the foremost custodian of the Great American Songbook pays tribute to the music's greatest practitioner, the results are guaranteed to be both dynamic and original. Such was indeed the case in 2008 when Michael Feinstein crafted The Sinatra Project, which marked his ninth Concord release and was nominated for a Grammy. Feinstein, long recognized as not only one of the world's finest vocal and piano stylists but also for his tireless efforts to preserve, protect and promote the songs and songwriters that shaped the golden age of American music, wanted to pay tribute to the rich Sinatra legacy, but was determined to do so in a way that was fresh and unique. With The Sinatra Project, Feinstein explains, he "decided to focus on the aspects of Sinatra's art that people don't always think about; specifically, his particular taste and style in choosing music and how he pervaded it, paying close attention to the arrangements and orchestrations, which were important elements in making Sinatra great." Feinstein took songs Sinatra had sung--some instantly familiar others relatively obscure--and reinterpreted them in "different ways that still reflected his style and approach. It was a way into the material that allowed me honor him without copying; to bring the essence of him through without being an imitator."

Now, with The Sinatra Project, Volume II: The Good Life, Feinstein has found another inventive way in. "The second volume is really about Sinatra and his friends," says Feinstein. "It's about the people he influenced and who influenced him. The focus is more on the 1960s. The album includes a few songs Sinatra never sang, which was intentional because I wanted to encapsulate that era and show that, though he was still very important, music and styles were changing. It was the ushering in of a new sensibility, and yet the 1960s was still a time when rich, standards-type songs like `For Once In My Life' were still being created alongside newer pop elements like rock and roll."

Close to a dozen superstars, many of whom Sinatra counted as close friends and also deeply admired as artists, influenced Feinstein's song selections and his stylistic choices, including Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Ann-Margret, Duke Ellington, Fred Astaire, Nancy Wilson and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Again Feinstein combines familiar and comparatively obscure material, creating a 12-track playlist that extends from such signature Sinatra tunes as "Luck Be a Lady" and "The Lady Is a Tramp" to the extremely rare "C'est Comme Ça," co-written by Ellington and Marshall Barer for the 1966 Broadway flop Pousse Café (a musical adaptation of the 1930 Joseph von Sternberg film The Blue Angel, starring Marlene Dietrich).

In addition to producing the album, working with Feinstein on all the arrangements and orchestrations and conducting the 30-member orchestra, Elliott plays piano on eight of the dozen tracks. The album's core group also includes guitarist Jim Fox, bassist Kirk Smith, drummer Albie Berk and percussionist Bernie Dresel. Asked if it is difficult to work with another pianist when he is so accustomed to accompanying himself, Feinstein responds, "Not at all... It is fun to work with someone else because it spurs me to sing the songs a little differently." Feinstein does, however, accompany himself on four tracks, two--"The Good Life" and "Sway"--with the full orchestra and two--"C'est Comme Ça" and "I'll Be Around"--with just Smith and violinist Sid Page. As for the album's subtitle, Feinstein says he chose "The Good Life" because "it reflects the '60s, when Sinatra had gotten to a point in his life where he became iconic in a way that was different from the '50s. He really came into his own. And it was also a good time. "The Good Life" is a song from the mid-'60s and people were in many ways, if perhaps illusionary, living a good life."

Jóia was released simultaneously with Qualquer Coisa in 1975, and bears resemblance both to that album and Caetano Veloso's previous and highly experimental studio album Araçá Azul. As on Qualquer Coisa, the sound is quiet, soft, and mainly acoustic. If anything, Jóia comes across as even more soft and quiet than Qualquer Coisa. There are many very beautiful melodies on the record, and two of the finest are "Lua, Lua, Lua" and "Guá." Unlike Qualquer Coisa, almost all of the songs here are Veloso originals, but there is also an unusual interpretation of "Help!," the famous Beatles song. The soft general tone of the album and some experimental tracks perhaps make Jóia less directly accessible than other Veloso classics, like for example his next album, Bicho. Nevertheless, the album is a great one and, to many people, one of the best Veloso has ever recorded.

Michael Bublé's introduction to the music of the swing era came to him through his grandfather, who filled his grandson's ears with the sounds of the Mills Brothers, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and others. As Bublé eagerly absorbed the recordings, he began to realize that he wanted to be a singer and that this style of music, virtually foreign to his own generation, was what he wanted to perform. With his grandfather's assistance, Bublé soon learned a whole catalog of tunes and gained experience and exposure by singing as a guest with several local bands. While still in his teen years, he won the Canadian Youth Talent Search, released several independent albums, and performed in a musical review titled Swing that traveled across the U.S. It wasn't long before Bublé was introduced to Grammy-winning producer David Foster and signed his first major recording contract with Reprise Records.

The two Canadians began work on a debut album that would incorporate Bublé's aptitude for pop standards into songs that spanned several decades. His self-titled debut disc was released in early 2003 and featured jazzy takes on old standards like "Fever" and "The Way You Look Tonight" as well as newer classics like Van Morrison's "Moondance" and the Bee Gees' "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." Further exposure ensued with a world tour and appearances on several television programs like NBC's Today Show, in which he sang a duet with host Katie Couric. He finished off 2003 with an EP of holiday material, Let It Snow, and began 2004 with the live CD/DVD set Come Fly with Me. In 2005, It's Time was a numer one hit in Canada, Japan, Italy, and Australia and made the top ten of both the U.K. and U.S. Later that year he released the live album Caught in the Act. The holiday-themed album Christmas followed in 2006 with the studio effort Call Me Irresponsible dropping in 2007.

Review by Scott Yanow This CD reissue features the great Sarah Vaughan in a typically spontaneous Norman Granz Pablo production with pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Louie Bellson. Sassy sounds wonderful stretching out on such songs as "Midnight Sun," "More Than You Know," "Teach Me Tonight," and "Body and Soul," among others. All ten of the melodies are veteran standards that she knew backwards but still greeted with enthusiasm. A very good example of late-period Sarah Vaughan.

One of Caetano Veloso's last quasi-acoustic albums, this one is dedicated to Brazilian grooves (with the exception of a couple of reggae tracks). The album has been very well spun, and several tracks were hits: "Lua de São Jorge," "Oração ao Tempo," "Badauê" (Bahian grooves), "Cajuína" (Northeastern xote), "Menino do Rio" (pop ballad), "Elegia" (bolero), "Trilhos Urbanos" (reggae), "Louco por Você" (Carioca samba). There are also other tracks whose experimental character prevented them from being hits, but they still constitute excellent material. Delicate and also swinging arrangements, these are excellent compositions by an artist still in full-steam creative impetus.

On paper, River sounds like a match made in several versions of heaven. Legendary pianist Herbie Hancock re-imagines Joni Mitchell with his hand-picked, star-studdedband--including saxophonist Wayne Shorter--in tow. Luminary guests lend vocals to a song apiece: Norah Jones ("Court and Spark"), Tina Turner ("Edith and the Kingpin"), Corinne Bailey Rae ("River"), Luciana Souza ("Amelia"), Leonard Cohen (with an unsettlingly sanguine version of "The Jungle Line"), even Mitchell herself ("Tea Leaf Prophecy"). In the event, though, a few fundamental elements go awry. Hancock plays with almost saccharine understatement throughout, and even Shorter's seminal "Nefertiti" and Duke Ellington's "Solitude" fall into the album's presiding, somnolent surface, though to a lesser degree does the instrumental version of Mitchell's "Sweet Bird." But girding, and in some measure, saving, the proceedings, the lyrics here testify to a subtler wisdom guiding Hancock's set list. The mix includes a continuum from intrepid classics to dusty, fans-only fare, but a distinct reverence for Joni Mitchell the Poet threads them together, and, in the end, this album works best as a sleepy window into one fan's giddy and particular love affair with his source material. I’ll be damned if I can figure it out: the rise and fall of Neneh Cherry is one of the most unexplainable things to happen in the idustry for as long as I’ve been a music fan. Swedish-born Cherry burst onto the scene in the summer of ’89 with her hip-hop/dance stylings on the smash single “Buffalo Stance”. An attractive female with a social conscience who was rappin’ and singin’ on her records (at the same time) four years before Lauryn Hill blessed the mic (and seven years before L-Boogie became a star), Cherry got Grammy nominations (including a nod for the memorable 1989 Best New Artist prize that eventually went to legends Milli Vanilli) and much critical acclaim.

How many of you out there know that Neneh recorded and released a follow-up?

1992′s Homebrew came harder with both the MC skills and the social commentary, and despite intriguing lyrics, fantastic production (courtesy of Cherry and Cameron McVey AKA Booga Bear, who Neneh more commonly calls “my husband”) and guest appearances from superstars of rock & hip-hop, the album didn’t chart, and Cherry immediately dropped off the pop music radar, at least in the U.S.

That’s a damn shame, because this album is as excellent as any released by any other femcee/singer there is-with the possible exception of “Miseducation”. Actually, upon listening to Homebrew-maybe it’s a little ahead of it’s time? Or maybe it’s just too damn eclectic. How many albums can you think of that make room for a little brag-rap courtesy of Gang Starr’s guest shot on “Sassy” and a little crunchy rock via the Michael Stipe duet “Trout”? Shit, how many other artists had enough talent to collaborate with DJ Premier and Stipe and hold their own? Well, KRS-ONE did, but besides him?

Having managed to adjust the path of her career past the restrictive but positive stigma of album one Raw Like Sushi, Neneh Cherry delivers an album which musically and lyrically suggests a coming of age. Balancing out the content with a few directional turns, it spans a range of styles from pop ballads--with charming piano melodies, like "Feel It" and "Troubleman"--switching towards slightly misguided but tougher rock-influenced tracks--like the lyrically sensuous "Hornbeam". With a number of popular singles, including the hugely successful "7 Seconds"--featuring Yossou N'Dour--and the James Brown retort "Woman", there are a number of instantly recognisable moments. It is within the shuddering strings and Massive Attack-esque beats of "Carry Me", however, that her voice is most at home. Taking it's name from one of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Ten Summoner's Tales is one of Sting's most accessible and optimistic albums. His new-found positivity suggests that the artist had finally recovered from the death of both his parents, which were so poignantly dealt with on his previous releases Nothing Like The Sun and Soul Cages. As the title suggests, the album also has mediaeval connections, apparent on biblical track titles such as "Saint Augustine In Hell" and "Fields of Gold". Moreover, in true Chaucerian style the album even has a "Prologue" and an "Epilogue". Even though the tone of the tracks on Ten Summoner's Tales is less melancholic than earlier albums, Sting still retains the ability to write deep, informed lyrics; "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" and "It's Probably Me" are typically classic Sting moments. After two albums of muted, mature jazz-inflected pop, the last being an explicit album about death, Sting created his first unapologetically pop album since the Police with Ten Summoner's Tales. The title, a rather awkward pun on his given last name, is significant, since it emphasizes that this album is a collection of songs, without any musical conceits or lyrical concepts tying it together. And, frankly, that's a bit of a relief after the oppressively somber The Soul Cages and the hushed though lovely, Nothing Like the Sun. Sting even loosens up enough to crack jokes, both clever (the winking litany of celebrity pains of "Epilogue [Nothing 'Bout Me]") and condescending (the sneeringly catchy cowboy tale "Love Is Stronger Than Justice [The Munificent Seven]"), and the result is his best solo record. In places, it's easily as pretentious as his earlier work, but that's undercut by writing that hasn't been this sharp and melodic since the Police, plus his most varied set of songs since Synchronicity.
